In fact, Pius XII was the first Pope whose magisterium explicitly revised the traditional teaching on salvation outside the Church in a more liberal direction, which trads generally ignore. Furthermore, Pius XII himself oversaw the doctrinal commission that condemned Feenyism in the 1940s. He says explicitly that non-Catholics can be saved, and remained in good standing with the hierarchy. Ronald Knox's discussion of the subject in his pre-Vatican II book, The Belief of Catholics. I haven't got time to break all of that down, but just one example is Fr. (I say almost because the SSPX uses John XXIII's 1962 Missal, which changed a few things, and of course there's Pius XII's 1955 Holy Week reform, which some trads use and some don't.)īut on the other hand, if you peruse even relatively conservative Catholic writings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, you see a progressively greater openness to things like the idea of salvation outside the Church. I've heard from plenty of people that the Church used to be even more hardcore on brainwashing, subjugation, and physical abuse of children back then than it is now, and of course the trads use almost exactly the same rites as pre-Vatican II Catholics. On the one hand, there's no doubt that the day-to-day experience for the average lay Catholic in the SSPX / SSPV / sedevacantists / whatever is much more similar to your typical pre-1958 Catholic than the standard Novus Ordo experience. It's not necessarily an easy question to answer.
